What are the most successful Franchises?

Change Text Size A A A

The phenomenon of franchising started life in the United States and the world’s greatest superpower is still the place many budding entrepreneurs turn when seeking inspiration for their next big idea.

There are some incredibly successful franchise-based businesses in the US. According to the Entrepreneur 2014 Franchise 500 list, the top ten include a mix of familiar and unfamiliar brand names.

Among the ones you will have heard of are the likes of fast food outlet Subway, restaurant chain Pizza Hut and the popular doughnut brand Dunkin’ Donuts, which boasts more than 70 varieties of doughnuts!

Other brands which people in the UK will be less familiar with include Supercuts – a chain of hairdressers which is neither high end salon or barbers shop, but instead has created the perfect 20 minute hair cut eliminating the need to book appointments.

The number one ranked franchise business according to the 2014 list is Anytime Fitness, which started franchising in 2002 and gives customers the chance to access their fitness clubs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even when the gyms are unstaffed. Access is made possible thanks to good security systems, something which is working increasingly well in other sectors such as self-storage.

Looking further down the list, other successful franchise businesses include the Days Inn hotel group, the Kumon Maths Centres and, of course, McDonald’s.

While many of these brands are now operating worldwide, they continue to have a lot in common with franchise businesses such as SureCare.

Among the fundamentals offered by any good franchise business are: 1) Great market opportunity, 2) Outstanding training, 3) Intensive ongoing support and 4) comprehensive marketing, PR, advertising and, increasingly, social media support.

Whether you are thinking about becoming your own boss in the care sector or opening a pizza delivery or doughnut store in your home territory, these items should be at the top of any entrepreneur’s check list.

Despite all of this, don’t fall into the trap of thinking that running a successful franchise will be a piece of cake if you have a successful brand name behind you. Ultimately, it is the franchisee’s passion, commitment and hard work that will determine just how successful you become.
